look at my cars past and present at superford! by today's standards. Also as somebody else already mentioned, they H code does not have the same cam as the S code. I think if you look into it you will find that the H code has 9.5-1 compression just like the Y code but the Z and S code has 10.5-1 compression. To make an Z code (Intermediate version) into an S code you would need a cam, valve springs, carb and distributor. To make an H code into an S code you would need pistons, a cam, valve springs, intake, carb and distributor. The 66 and 67 H code intermediate engine was common enough. Rebuild it to GT specs, replace distributor, carb and intake and you have a GT. An H code in a Fairlane does have value as a core as so many parts can be used to build a GT as the components that you would replace in a rebuild are mostly what makes it different. They are basically identical to most other 58-65 heads except for the extra bosses on teh exhaust side. They are desirable for one reason only, they have the same port design as earlier 352/390 heads but can be drilled to fit the Mustang and Fairlane chassis so they can be modified and have flow potential but there is nothing otherwise special about them. The rods are nothing special and are not a step away from LeMans rods, more like a football field away! The heads are just the standard 66 heads and are also not too special. The design was related to how they flowed and what the end purpose was. The only differance between H and Y code engines were the pistons. So Just to be clear, NONE of these casting numbers are (SPECIAL) at all, including rods and crank. The Block, and head numbers could be found on 352s and 428 Q code engines that same year. A Galaxie Z code engine was rated higher. The Cam, Holley 4 bbl and distributor are what made the power for the 390GT, not the casting numbers. The only differance in compression was 2 or 4 bbl pistons. The galaxie would not have the same exhaust manifolds but they were no hi/po part either. look at my cars past and present at superford! ġ972 Maverick C6ME-A 6B7 02/07/66 FE390 Block (4.050 bore)Īll of these parts went into every other 390 that year as well. Below I have included a list of the casting numbers from my engine and you will note that but for the 2v intake it has all the right stuff, my advise to you is that if you feel it is a good deal then buy it and enjoy it and if you want it to be a GT then add the 4v intake and carb. The 2v carb and intake being the only difference whereas the Y code motor has a lower compression ratio and of course has lower horse power. The H code engine in my '66 Comet when taken apart for rebuild had all the same internals as an S code motor used in GT Mustangs and Fairlanes etc.
